Kochi ODI: Match abandoned due to rain

The first ODI between India and Australia was abandoned today due to heavy rains in Kochi. Even though there was sunshine and blue skies at the scheduled start time of the match, the ground was wet due to downpours during the night. The match was initially expected to have a delayed start at 11 am, but a fresh rainfall around 10:20 am sealed its fate as abandoned.The 2nd ODI will be played in Visakhapatnam on Oct 20th.

Kochi ODI: Rain might play spoilsport at Kochi one-dayer

Heavy rain in Kochi since Thursday night has raised concerns about the fate of the first One-Day International between India and Australia to be played in Kochi on October 17. However, security measures are in full swing, with a 2500 member police force, along with 100 commandoes, having been deployed for ensuring safety.

There are many changes to the Indian squad that will see most of the senior players being rested for the three-match series. There is no Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir or Sachin Tendulkar, and in their place, Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay will open the innings. The bowling will be shorn of Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma, which gives an opportunity to the likes of R Ashwin and Vinay Kumar. Australia have followed suit with Ponting left out of their squad along with all-rounder Shane Watson and fast bowler Mitchell Johnson, while Michael Clarke will take over as captain.
