ICC Super Series 2005

ICC Super Series Cricket News 2005 Discuss More

The International Cricket Council (ICC) will announce the selection panel for the inaugural ICC Super Series on Wednesday in Melbourne. ICC Chief Executive, Malcolm Speed, will name the international panel of cricket greats who will choose the ICC World XI teams to take on Australia in October, an ICC release said.
The ICC Super Series will see Australia as the number one ranked team in international cricket take on a team of the best players from all other countries in a three-match, one-day series on October 5, 7 and 9 at the Telstra Dome in Melbourne, and a one-off, six-day Super Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground from October 14-19.
"Choosing between Rahul Dravid , Michael Vaughan, Sachin Tendulkar , Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis, Inzamam ul-Haq, Stephen Fleming, Brian Lara, Vireder Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly is hard enough let alone having to then choose the all rounder, the wicket-keeper and the bowling attack," said Speed in an earlier interview, last year.

Australia confirmed as top Test team

Australia was confirmed as the team to take on the Rest of the World XI in the ICC Super Series Test after beating New Zealand in the two Test home series in November 2004. Australia's lead in the ICC Test Championship is such that even if it loses all of its matches before the 1 April 2005 cut-off date it will still be top of the official table at this time. Cricket Australia Chief Executive James Sutherland said that the confirmation of Australia's top position was a major boost to the organisation's plans for the event.

Steve Waugh signed off in style with an innings that portrayed his character impeccably as Australia forced a draw to finish the series 1-1 against a determined India at the SCG. The standing ovation that Waugh earned will reverberate for some time to come as the audience rose to pay tribute to a highly distinguished modern cricketer who brought glory to the game with his dedication and a vision to create a great combination. In the closing stages, with the crowd chanting "Steve Waugh, Steve Waugh", it was a fight between the Australia skipper and the bowlers wanting to deny him his 33rd century in 168 Tests. The Indians denied him that honour but not the respect as they all converged on the man to pat him and shake his hands. Waugh deserved the emotional farewell.
