Dies at 25, after freakish accident

Death came two days after being hit by a bouncer

Two days after being struck by a bouncer in what was called a freakish accident, Australian star cricketer Phillip Hughes died in a Sydney hospital on Thursday. Cricketers, politicians and sports people have paid tribute to Hughes, who at 25, became one of only a handful of professional players to suffer a fatal head injury on the field within the last century. Hughes had burst on to the international scene in 2009 with two hundreds in his second Test.

The South Australian batsman was playing in a Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales when a bouncer from Sean Abbott hit his neck. Hughes received mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the pitch and was soon whisked by medical transport off the pitch to St Vincent's Hospital. He then received emergency surgery to reduce the pressure on his brain but never regained consciousness.

After his death was announced, cricket officials from Pakistan and New Zealand chose to postpone the second day's play in the third and final Test between the two countries. A two-day tour match between a Cricket Australia XI and India, scheduled to be played in Adelaide on Friday and Saturday, has been cancelled.

India 'A' convincingly take CSA Tri-series title in Pretoria

India 'A' emphatically beat their Australian counterparts by 50 runs to clinch the Tri-series final of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) triangular series at the TUKS Oval in Pretoria on Wednesday. Injured Dhawan ruled out of 4th Test; Suresh Raina included

India's latest batting sensation Shikhar Dhawan who suffered a hand injury during the Mohali test was on Tuesday ruled out of the fourth and final Test against Australia in Delhi. He will be out of action for six weeks, and Suresh Raina will replace him in the squad. The selection committee had opted for veteran left-handed batsman Gautam Gambhir as the substitute opener, before a blood test showed he was down with jaundice. In the absence of Sehwag, Gambhir and Dhawan, Murali Vijay and Ajinkya Rahane are the only openers in the squad and Rahane, who is yet to play a Test, looks most likely to partner Vijay in Delhi. Suresh Raina, who has played 17 tests, wasn't part of the squad for the four Tests against England and the first three Tests against Australia. India Squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Murali Vijay, Suresh Raina, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Ishant Sharma, Ashok Dinda, Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Of the last Ten Tests played by Australia in India, they have lost eight and drawn the remaining three.Earlier, a defiant 65-minute last-wicket stand between Starc (35) and Xavier Doherty (18) consumed 18.1 overs for 44 runs to ensure the Indians bat well into the mandatory overs. Sehwag dropped for remaining Tests

India has dropped veteran batsman Virender Sehwag from the Test side for the first time since 2008, possibly ending the reign of one of cricket's most brutal openers. The squad was trimmed to 14 with the selectors deciding against picking a replacement for him. The out of form opener has scored just 27 runs in his three innings (2, 19 and 6) during the ongoing series. At the start of the Australia series, his regular opening partner Gautam Gambhir was also dropped from the Indian test squad, but then hit a century for India A against the touring side.

[Above: Sehwag's tweet after the news broke.]
The hard-hitting 34-year-old has scored 8,586 runs in 104 Tests at an average of 49.34 since his debut in 2001. At his peak he was relentless, twice passing Triple Hundred - 309 in Multan in 2004 against Pakistan and 319 in Chennai against South Africa in 2008. However, he has scored only one century since November 2010 - a 117 against England in 2012. His 219 from 149 balls against West Indies remains a world record score in one-day international cricket. In the absence of Sehwag, Delhi-born left-hander Shikhar Dhawan could get a chance to open the innings with Murali Vijay in the two matches to be played in Mohali (from March 14) and Delhi (from March 22) respectively. India Squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Ishant Sharma, Ashok Dinda, Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Kochi ODI: Rain might play spoilsport at Kochi one-dayer

Heavy rain in Kochi since Thursday night has raised concerns about the fate of the first One-Day International between India and Australia to be played in Kochi on October 17. However, security measures are in full swing, with a 2500 member police force, along with 100 commandoes, having been deployed for ensuring safety. There is no Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir or Sachin Tendulkar, and in their place, Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay will open the innings. The bowling will be shorn of Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma, which gives an opportunity to the likes of R Ashwin and Vinay Kumar. Australia have followed suit with Ponting left out of their squad along with all-rounder Shane Watson and fast bowler Mitchell Johnson, while Michael Clarke will take over as captain.Indian ODI squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Captain), Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Saurabh Tiwary, R Ashwin, Praveen Kumar, Ashish Nehra, Munaf Patel, Vinay Kumar, Ravindra Jadeja, Rohit Sharma.

Harbhajan picked up two wickets so far while Pragyan Ojha snapped up three to give India hopes of a 2-0 sweep of the Test series. In the morning session, Sachin Tendulkar completed his sixth Test double hundred, but a lower-middle order collapse left India with a 17-run lead on the fourth day of the second Test.

He reached the landmark in his 171st Test and finished unbeaten on 44 as India recovered from 38-2 to reach 128 without further loss at stumps in reply to the tourists’ tally of 478, in which Marcus North starred with 128. North's innings included 17 boundaries and a six in his five-and-a-half hour stay at the crease while his 149-run stand with Tim Paine ensured that Australia had a healthy total to fall back on.
IND v AUS, Bangalore Test, Day 2: India 128/2 (Tendulkar 44*, Vijay 42*) trail Australia 478 (North 128, Paine 59, Harbhajan 4-148, Ojha 3-120) by 350 runs

India came back strongly with 3 wickets after lunch, but Ponting's 54th half-century helped the tourists survive a middle-order collapse to reach 285-5 by stumps in front of 20,000 boisterous home fans at the Chinnaswamy stadium.

VVS Laxman struck a superb unbeaten 73 as India fought back from the brink of defeat to beat Australia by one wicket in a thrilling first Test in Mohali. Laxman, batting with a runner due to a back injury, was ably assisted by tail-ender Ishant Sharma as India rallied from 124-8 to within sight of victory. Sharma made 31 before being trapped leg before wicket by Ben Hilfenhaus. With 11 still needed, Laxman was joined by last-man Pragyan Ojha and they got India home in a nailbiting finish. This was India's first one-wicket victory in Tests. The 81-run partnership for the ninth wicket between VVS Laxman and Ishant Sharma was the second-highest against Australia, behind the 89-run stand between Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan in 2004.India lead two-match series 1-0 ahead of second Test in Bangalore

Mohali Test, day four: Australia sniff victory

Australia ended Day 4 in the first Test at Mohali on a high, reducing India to 55 for four, after 17 overs, in their second innings at stumps on Monday.
The hosts need 161 runs more for what now seems an improbable victory.Earlier, in the day's final session, the Indian bowlers put in an inspired display to dismiss Australia cheaply in their second innings. Zaheer and Ishant were the pick of Indian bowlers with three wickets apiece, while both the spinners, Harbhajan and Ojha, picked two each. The visitors made 192 (in 60.5 overs) for an overall lead of 215.
IND v AUS, Mohali Test, Day 4: India 405 and 55 for 4 (Tendulkar 10*, Zaheer 5*, Hilfenhaus 3-22) need another 161 runs to beat Australia 428 and 192 (Watson 56, Ishant 3-34, Zaheer 3-43)

Mohali Test, day two: A world record for Sehwag as India fight back‎

India rode on Virender Sehwag's record-equalling half-century to reach 110-2 in their first innings in reply to Australia's 428 in the opening Test on Saturday. The Indian opener scored a blazing 59 off 54 balls with 10 fours in the final session after Australian wicketkeeper Tim Paine (92) had missed out on a maiden Test hundred. Sehwag equalled the record of scoring a 50 or more in 11 consecutive Tests. West Indies' Viv Richards and Indian Gautam Gambhir are the other batsmen to have achieved the feat.
IND v AUS, Mohali Test, Day 2: India 110 for 2 (Sehwag 59) trail Australia 428 (Watson 126, Paine 92, Ponting 71, Zaheer 5-94) by 318 runs

Australia had elected to bat after winning the toss. Australia captain Ricky Ponting got into a verbal spat with India's fast bowler Zaheer Khan after he was run out for 71 by a direct throw by Suresh Raina. As the two got into a heated exchange of words, umpire Billy Bowden rushed in to calmed them down. The incident is likely to be reported by the umpires to the match referee Chris Broad.

Australia tour of India Oct-Nov 2009 news

India vs Australia, 7th ODI: Final ODI washed out (AUS-IND: 4-2|7)

Heavy rain washed out the seventh and final one-day international between India and Australia at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday, giving the tourists a 4-2 series win.
The game officials after inspecting the ground at 5 pm decided to cancel the match as persistent rain had rendered the pitch unplayable.

The Australian team will head back home on Thursday to prepare for the upcoming Test series against the West Indies. The Indian squad will get ready for the Test series against Sri Lanka to commence in Ahmedabad from Monday. Australian Shane Watson was declared Man of the Series. He scored 256 runs in 6 innings at an average of 42.66 and a strike rate of 91.10. His highest was 93 at Hyderabad.

India vs Australia, 6th ODI: Australia Clinch One-Day Series after beating India by 6 wickets (AUS-IND: 4-2|7)

After winning the toss and electing to bat, India received a big blow when Johnson took the wickets of both Sehwag and Gambhir in the very first over. The tumble of wickets continued in quick succession, thanks to an excellent performance by Bollinger (10-4-35-5). After 9 overs, India were 27/5 and it seemed like the Indian team may not be able to get their score into triple digits. But Ravindra Jadeja (57) and Praveen Kumar (54) withstood the Australian attack and took India to a somewhat respectable score of 170. The Indian bowlers did not succeed in taking wickets like their Australian counterparts. The first wicket came in the 5th over when Marsh was lbw to Patel. Watson was the top-scorer for the Aussies with 49 runs. Hussey contributed 35 runs and Ponting and White both made 25 runs each. For India, Harbhajan Singh brought down Watson and Ponting, but the Australians reached their target in 41.5 overs at the loss of only 4 wickets.

With this win, Australia has now clinched the One-Day Series winning 4 out of 7 games. Australia have done a commendable job of coming from behind when India led the series (1-2), winning three consecutive games and ensuring the series win (4-2).
Australia 172/4 (Watson 49, Hussey 35, Harbhajan Singh 2-23) beat India 170 (R.Jadeja 57, P.Kumar 54, Bollinger 5-35, Johnson 3-39) by six wickets

India vs Australia, 5th ODI: Australia beat India by 3 runs despite Tendulkar record (AUS-IND: 3-2|7)

Man-of-the-match Sachin Tendulkar became the first batsman to reach 17,000 runs in one-day international cricket, and reached his 45th century, in his 435th ODI, but it was not enough to give India a victory against Australia on Thursday. He hit a superb 175 off only 141 deliveries including 19 fours and four sixes, as India chased and missed Australia's imposing 350-4 by 3 runs.
An opening stand of 145 with Shaun Marsh scoring 112 and Shane Watson 93 helped Australia rack up the huge total.India was looking at a hugely unexpected win (19 needed off 18), when Tendulkar finally fell to McKay, caught by Nathan Hauritz. Later Praveen Kumar bludgeoned a six to leave the Indians wanting 10 off 10. Just eight was needed when the final over started, but with two balls to go, Praveen Kumar was run out. India had fallen four runs shy of what would have been the second-highest run chase in one-day internationals.
Australia 350/4 (Marsh 112, Watson 93, White 57) beat India 347 (Tendulkar 175, Raina 59, Watson 3-47, McKay 3-59) by three runs

India vs Australia, 4th ODI: Australia beat India by 24 runs to level ODI series (AUS-IND: 2-2|7)

Put in to bat after India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss, Shane Watson hit 49 and took three wickets as the Aussies fought back in Mohali to win the fourth one-day international.
